October proves a good month for Crater diamonds
By Waymon Cox
Greetings from Crater of Diamonds State Park! In October, the Crater saw a great increase in the number of diamonds recorded at the park. 38 visitors registered 73 diamonds during the month, weighing a total of 13.16 carats. Two of the gems weighed one carat or more, the largest a 1.17 ct. brown diamond found on the 16th!
Travelers from 16 states outside of Arkansas (including a few “regular” diamond miners who returned after a break from the summer heat) found 70% of all diamonds certified in October. The number and weight of October finds totaled more than all August and September finds combined! The last time more diamonds were registered in a single month was in April of this year, when the park certified 90 diamonds. In July, the Crater recorded 60 gems with a heavier total weight of 16.78 carats!
This increase in diamond certifications resulted from several factors, including cooler weather, rainy days, and a new trench dug during the month. Park staff experienced busy weekends throughout October, as families visited during fall break to mine for diamonds.
More than 500 diamonds have been registered at the Crater so far in 2010. As November is traditionally one of the park’s wettest months, it will be interesting to see how many people take advantage of the rain to search for diamonds in the coming weeks, and how it will affect the total number of diamonds registered this year!
